The wild edge of Florida

The Ten Thousand Islands

A mangrove labyrinth on the Gulf edge of Everglades National Park. Endless sandbars, hidden beaches, dolphin pods and quiet you can't find anywhere else.

The Ten Thousand Islands fan out south and east of Marco Island for roughly 35 miles of mangrove channels, oyster bars and barrier shoals. It's one of the largest mangrove ecosystems on Earth, and almost none of it is reachable by car. The easiest way in is on the water — either a guided private tour or a kayak day trip from one of the launches along the Tamiami Trail.
