World-class shelling

Marco Island Shelling Tours

Sand Dollar Island, Cape Romano and the Ten Thousand Islands — Marco's barrier shoals are some of Florida's best shelling. Here's how to actually get there.

Marco Island's shelling reputation is earned. The shifting sand bars off Tigertail Beach and the barrier shoals south of the island are stacked with conchs, fighting conchs, horse conchs, sand dollars, lightning whelks, scallops, lettered olives and (if the tide is kind) a junonia or two. Most of the best stuff is on islands you can only reach by boat, which is why private shelling tours are the move.

Best time of day & year

  • Two hours either side of low tide is prime time.
  • The morning after a storm or strong tide change brings in fresh shells.
  • December through April is peak season — calmest seas and the most shells turned up.

Where the shells actually are

  • Sand Dollar Island — the shifting sandbar off Tigertail Beach.
  • Cape Romano — quieter, harder to reach, often the best haul.
  • Kice Island & Morgan Pass — boat-only shelling on the south end.
  • Ten Thousand Islands — endless sandbars, gentle currents, fewer people.

A few shelling rules to know

  • Florida law: do not take any live shells (a critter still inside).
  • Sand dollars must be white and clearly dead — leave the dark ones alone.
  • Rookery Bay protected zones have stricter rules — your captain will know.
